Policy of saving Guyana’s rainforest is paying off

WOW! This was all I could say today as I was pleasantly surprised to read in one of the daily newspapers that President Jagdeo has been named as one of the 2008 Heroes of the Environment in the Time magazine.

I must say that as a Guyanese, I am proud to know that all the talk about saving Guyana’s rainforest is paying off. This may not be in a major way now, but gradually in the future, since it is getting attention on the international scene.

I believe Guyanese need to support the President with this venture as it will benefit the entire country if we receive finance for saving the forest and if it fully succeeds. We are one of the few countries on the planet fortunate enough to still have a good forest and we need to ‘bask in this glory’ and use it to our advantage and at the same time, assist environmentalists to save the earth from destruction by pollution.

Receiving money for the forest could also help the country to boost its sea defences to prevent flooding so I am looking forward to this venture being successful. Good luck to the President and I wish him continued success with this issue.
