REGION Two Chairman Mr Alli Baksh has announced that a new primary school will be built at Hackney in Lower Pomeroon next year.

Mr Baksh made the announcement Thursday at a meeting with residents of the community in the old Hackney Primary School.

The chairman accompanied, by a team from the Regional Administration, inspected the old school building with scores of parents after several members of the school’s Parent/Teachers Association (PTA) visited his office at Anna Regina on Wednesday and complained that the 75-year-old building is falling apart.

Addressing scores of parents, teachers and students, Mr Baksh said the construction of the school should have been a priority project a long time ago, but the Education Department never reported the state of the school to the Regional Administration.

However, Mr Baksh assured parents and teachers that the project will be included in the region’s capital programme for 2009.

Chairman of the school PTA, Mrs Anna James, thanked the Chairman for taking prompt action in the matter and said residents will be looking forward to the new school in 2009.

In the meantime, Mr Baksh said maintenance work will be done on the old building.
