Ministry awaiting ‘all clear’ at University of Guyana Turkeyen campus
THE Minister of Education Shaik Baksh said the results of the air testing exercise to ascertain the safety of the University of Guyana Campus at Turkeyen, following the asbestos removal, is likely by early next week.
He told the Guyana Chronicle that currently the focus is on making certain the university buildings are free of the substance before the green light is given for classes to resume there.
Baksh said while he cannot give a time frame as to when classes will commence, he is certain it will not begin as late as next year as some quarters believe.
Government early this year allocated $ 300 M to the university, of which $ 200 M was used for the asbestos removal.
That process started in July and the remainder of the sum granted will be used to purchase furniture and maintain sanitisation on campus.
The problem was detected in August last year by the Canadian Laboratory Resources Environmental Associates Limited, after tests were carried out on 131 sample materials.
