Reminders of February 17 Bartica massacre still visible

VISIBLE reminders of the February 17 massacre are still visible along First Avenue, Bartica, last Saturday, after six months.

Cement patches on the walls of the Banks DIH branch building partially hid bullet holes and the white Land Rover used by the marauders was in the Police Station compound in a state of disrepair.

Workmen were repairing a section of the wharf where five boatmen met their deaths at the hands of the merciless killers.

Like relatives of the other victims, most residents of Bartica expressed relief that the man who allegedly led the assault no longer poses a threat.

But many were not yet prepared to revisit the events of that tragic night, preferring to change the subject when approached.

“It was a very traumatic event. Barticians are still shaken. The fear and the grief have not completely gone,” one resident offered. (Clifford Stanley)
