CARIFESTA MAKING THE CARIBBEAN A NATION OF LIVING CULTURES

By : Prem Misir | Department : Features

CARIFESTA is here! And last Friday evening, Guyana staged the opening ceremony of CARIFESTA after a 36-year absence. For me, CARIFESTA is about understanding each person’s culture and appreciating those cultures, essential ingredients for national unity.
The first item at the opening ceremony, the Parade of Nations, truly was picturesque, faithfully depicting a diversity of cultures, […]

The Jagdeo Initiative - A mother’s legacy of love

By : Guyana Chronicle | Department : Features

By Parvati Persaud-Edwards
THE Jagdeo Initiative on agriculture did not emerge out of a vacuum but evolved from a childhood where he witnessed his industrious mother help feed the family and augment the family income with produce from her kitchen garden.
It is very likely he also helped her and knows first-hand that food you grow yourself […]

By : Rickey Singh | Department : Features

JAMAICANS ARE celebrating a new image of their country inscribed in gold and silver by the amazing, record-breaking victories of their athletes at the Beijing Olympics.
Too long burdened with the horrible reputation of a ‘killing field’ for armed criminals, Jamaica has now skyrocketed into international fame as a world power in track and field sport.

EPA bad for the Caribbean

By : Guyana Chronicle | Department : Letters

PRESIDENT Bharrat Jagdeo is a towering example to the Caribbean leaders in the fight against the signing on to the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) as the Caribbean stands to gain very little. Even the Caribbean Policy Development Centre

I READ a recent article which stated that the PNCR will be boycotting CARIFESTA X. I am very happy that the Party executives have decided on this action. The PNCR is NOT good for Guyana. They are a selfish lot who only want to control Guyana so that they can fill their pockets.
CARIFESTA X is […]

By : Guyana Chronicle | Department : Letters

Please permit me to respond to the letter captioned; ‘Guyanese Need a Special Presidential Candidate’ published in the Wednesday, August 20, 2008, edition of the Kaieteur Newspaper and written by a ghost writer, which contains some unfair and irresponsible statements, and conveys an incorrect impression of Mr. Donald Ramoutar, the General Secretary of the PPP.

Local response to CARIFESTA X heartening

By : Guyana Chronicle | Department : Letters

THE tremendous response by Guyanese at the many venues listed to distribute Carifesta tickets it is overwhelming evidence that when it comes to some issues Guyanese, do not mix them with politics.
I have never seen such a massive turnout of people… queues extending from one point to beyond. Just imagine that there were persons who […]

Free access to CARIFESTA X events commendable

By : Guyana Chronicle | Department : Letters

THE decision by President Bharrat Jagdeo to host CARIFESTA X after The Bahamas indicated its inability to do so may have saved the festival from going into dormancy as it did for 10 years between 1981 and 1992.
The other decision that should be commended was the decision to make admittance to all the events free.
While […]
