One larceny defendant remanded, other fined
SIXTEEN-year-old Rayon Glen of Friendship, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle yesterday, charged with theft from the CARIFESTA Secretariat in Middle Street, Georgetown.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to simple larceny and was remanded to the Ruimveldt Juvenile Centre, until July 24.
Particulars of the offence said, last June 26, he stole a ‘Mountain Climber’ bicycle valued $30,000, property of the CARIFESTA Secretariat.
Police Inspector Denise Griffith, prosecuting, said he was apprehended while riding the bike on Carmichael Street, also in Georgetown, on June 29.
The magistrate refused him bail because she said the Police may have a difficult time finding the defendant, who said he now resides at Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara.
He was instructed to have an adult relative present on the next occasion.
Another larceny defendant, Mark Campbell, was fined $35,000 with the alternative of 12 months imprisonment.
Campbell, 35, of Alliance Road, Timehri, on East Bank Demerara, too, admitted that, last June 30, he stole an umbrella worth $30,000, belonging to Jerry Bacchus.
Prosecutor Griffith said the umbrella was left outside Jerry’s Snackette on Waterloo Street, in the city, too, from where it was stolen.
The Prosecutor said the thief fled to ‘Globe Yard’ in the same street where Police found him.
