BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) – Kerron Cottoy again tormented Guyana, as Windward Islands held firm in their TCL Group West Indies Under-19 match yesterday.

Cottoy, the Windwards captain, snared four wickets for 47 runs from 27 overs, as Guyana, trailing by 71 runs from the first innings, reached 153 for six in their second innings when stumps were drawn on the second day of second round match on Wednesday at Combermere School.

Herman Latcha captured three wickets for 37 runs from 19 overs, as Windwards had been dismissed for 189, replying to Guyana’s first innings total of 118, just before lunch.

Guyana began their second innings solidly before three wickets, two to Cottoy, had them on the ropes.

They were 73 for three, when Seon Hetmyer was bowled by Cottoy for 16 as the Guyana batting once again failed to fire on a flat pitch.

Anthony Bramble and Eugene La Fleur carried Guyana to tea on 73 for four, and things got worse in the first over after the break.

Bramble fell for 17 to the left-arm spin of Alton Audian, and Guyana, the most successful team in the 40-year history of championship with 12 titles, were tottering on 85 for five.

The level-headed La Fleur, one of five players in the team who played last year, was joined by Latcha and the pair batted intelligently in a 47-run partnership.

Cottoy had Latcha, who battled for 80 minutes and 87 balls for 19, caught behind to leave the score on 132 for six.

But Jeetendra Sookdeo, nursing a side strain which kept him off the field for most of Wednesday, joined La Fleur, the Guyana captain, who is not out on 37, and the pair saw their team to the close.

Earlier, the Windwards began the penultimate day on 120 for three, and quickly lost four wickets for just 26 runs from 12 overs in the first hour’s play before Delron Johnson hit three fours and two sixes in 41 from 31 balls

Johnson shared a 50-run, eighth-wicket partnership with Oscar George, who finished unbeaten on 15 to lift the Windwards from 128 for seven.

Johnson was dropped by Totaram Bishun off Leon Scott on five, and again by Hetmyer on 39 off Latcha.

The Guyanese did not pay much for the second chance, since Johnson skied Latcha for a caught-and-bowled offering off the next ball to leave Windwards 178 for eight before the rest of the batting folded.

Latcha was the leading Guyana bowler and he gained admirable support from Keon Joseph, Scott, and Bishun, all of whom took two wickets.
