Viewpoint By David DeGroot

I have been wrestling with a thought about the claim by the Stabroek News that they are impartial in their practiced policy of disseminating national news, and I agonize, try as I may, that reluctantly my belief of their opposition to the ruling administration appears to be correct. In preparing this viewpoint, I selected randomly some issues of their newspapers from the top of the pile of past papers and without reviewing them, this is what I find appearing on the front pages: “Ballistics shows no link to Fine Man gang – sources.” This was in their June 25 issue. Well, by now everyone is aware that the statement is a blatant fabrication. Of course, as is the custom, they will say it was their source that they were quoting; an insidious excuse that they are accustomed in adopting. But the fact on this issue is that the Stabroek were, from their initial report on the issue, were insinuating that it was the Joint Services that may have affected the murders of the burnt bodies mystery, so they wanted to justify the absurd assertion.Another front page headline, that of Sunday, June 15, 2008, which states “Army credibility on the line – GHRA. This fabrication is based on the one-man organization known as the Guyana Human Rights Association, notorious for their anti-administration position, but it suits the policy of Stabroek to malign the agencies of the government.Yet another fabrication was published in their Sunday, June 8, 2008 edition, which states “Roger Khan had gov’t permission to buy spy equipment – lawyer”. Again, everyone is aware that this is a blatant lie; it turned out that the permission to import the spy equipment would have come from the US government. There is just no limit to which the Stabroek will go in their eagerness to embarrass the government. They stand naked in their shameful attempts to cast aspersions at an administration that is performing wonders in the honorable task of rebuilding a once devastated country, physically and in economic terms. This viewpoint is not intended to sing the praises of the all-around successes in the development of the country; it is to appeal for honesty to be embraced rather than wicked attempts to satisfy an evil policy to belittle the best efforts of a dedicated administration. It must be pointed out that in all of the three wicked headlines which were referred to earlier, the basis for carrying the stories were attributed to “sources” and not to any official or accurate release. Simply shameful and disrespectful!
