Whispering Mabel on guns, Robert Corbin & food prices
Having a firearm in your possession, particularly the younger generation, and unlicensed, the urge to use it predominates without any thought of the end result and/or consequences. Mabel is of the view that a thorough campaign to rid the society of these illegal weapons should be undertaken as a high priority.
The best and most significant news that has dramatically impacted favourably on every living Guyanese did not warrant front page publicity even in the government-owned Chronicle, who virtually buried the news item on page 18 of their Sunday issue. What a crying shame, more especially since this bit of good news will never be given any prominence in the privately-owned newspapers. Mabel is referring to the unbelievable percentage decline of this country’s debt servicing from a high of 94% of revenues to 4%. Quite a remarkable achievement!
The height of stupidity on the part of leader of the political opposition, Robert Corbin, blaming the Guyana government’s competence for the effects of the worldwide phenomenon on the rising food prices, on our own experience, when every other country in the world is crying out on the reality of rising food prices. Even the great and powerful USA, according to a Reuters reports, had this to say: “US food prices will rise by 5% this year, the largest increase since 1990 and propelled by sharply higher prices for bread, cookies and other bakery products, the Agriculture Department said on Monday.
This government has adopted positive steps to ensure the prices for bread and other bakery products do not rise as part of its overall admirable efforts to cushion the ill effects of the world phenomenon.
Is Robert Corbin, PNCR opposition leader, unaware of the nationally announced measures being put in place to face the inevitable reality of worldwide rise in prices for crude oil and wheat? The price for oil alone affects every other commodity apart from gasoline.
The Government just announced a further reduction of 10% in fuel tax, meaning the excise tax on gasoline has moved downward from 17% to only 7% now.
Mabel is elated over the unbelievable reduction of the debt servicing charges from US$2.1B to less than US$700M. This means that we will have so much more to spend in improving education, health care, water supply, infrastructure generally including social and economic, and ICT (Information Communication Technology), mainly benefitting our children. Wow! Good news in the face of rising food prices!
The abysmal ignorance of the proletariat of today far exceeds those of the 60’s and throughout the Burnham/Hoyte years of dictatorial rule and this factor alone portend the danger of attempting to rely on this section of our society to mount political demonstrations.
The determined effort of the current demonstrators in portraying unrestrained vulgarity and lewdness must be noticed by the leadership of the PNCR, in particular its leader Robert Corbin. Mabel believes that he is playing with fire, which he will not be able to control.
Leadership qualities of the founder leader and even his immediate successor are something that Robert Corbin severely lacks.
