VETERAN first-division and softball umpire Mervyn Kingston Bagot has died after a long battle with asthmatic illness. He died last Saturday morning. He was 75.

The 75-year-old Bagot, who also officiated at the regional West Indies Under-19 level whenever matches were played in Guyana, was considered an excellent official of the game.

He began his umpiring career in 1967 at the first-division cricket level in Demerara before moving up to Guyana Cricket Board Inter-county cricket competition at the various levels.

One of Bagot’s six sons, Earl Bagot, told Chronicle Sport yesterday that his father will be laid to rest shortly as he is awaiting the arrival of his five other brothers from overseas.
