A TWENTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD man, who was found with a quarter gramme of cocaine and half a gramme of cannabis (marijuana), has been jailed for a total of six years.

Magistrate Geeta Chandan imposed the custodial punishment on Imran Ali, of Lot 5 Reliance Abandon, West Canje, at New Amsterdam Court, also in Berbice, yesterday.

Police on mobile patrol saw the prisoner acting in a suspicious manner at Vryheid, in West Canje about 21:00h Thursday and a search of his person yielded the narcotics in a pants pocket.

He had some rock-like substance and leaves, seeds and stems of the prohibited plant for the purpose of trafficking, the Court heard.

Ali, convicted of possession and having trafficked the drugs after pleading guilty to the offences, was sentenced to concurrent three-year prison terms and fined $20,000, with the alternative of 20 more weeks imprisonment.
