A TAXI driver narrowly escaped death when he accelerated after two gunmen opened fire on him at Diamond New Housing Scheme, on Sunday night.

Andy Gobin, of Brickery, also on East Bank Demerara, had been hired by the duo about 22:15h but, at their requested destination, they held him at gunpoint.

Police said Gobin sped off, despite being shot in the chest and on both hands and managed to drive to Diamond Diagnostic Centre, from where he was taken to Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).

His condition was listed as stable up to press time and a warhead has been recovered from his motor car, Police said.

Gobin was one of two robbery victims on consecutive days. In the second, Police retrieved a magazine with twelve 9 mm rounds at the scene early Monday morning.

Police said miner Paul Moore, of Canterbury Walk, Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, was wounded by two men, armed with a handgun and a knife, at his home.

Moore and his wife were aroused by noise and, upon checking, were confronted by the two burglars who had broken in through a window.

The bandits held up the couple and three relatives and took away a laptop computer and two cell phones, Police reported.

The report said, as the two armed men were leaving, the one with the firearm discharged a round at Moore, hitting him in his right leg and, he too, is a GPH patient in stable condition.
