Rohee expresses concern over PNCR Carifesta threat

THE recent utterances by Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Mr. Robert Corbin, in relation to Guyana’s hosting of Carifesta X have come in for grave criticisms by the Minister of Home Affairs, Mr. Clement Rohee.

“The Ministry of Home Affairs has noted with interest Opposition Leader Robert Corbin’s threat to disrupt the peace and good order in the city. They are also deeply concerned over the threats made by the Opposition Leader against members of the Joint Services,” Minister Rohee said.

According to a statement from the Government Information Agency (GINA), Rohee said Corbin’s statements suggest that he has a plan which he intends to execute to prevent Carifesta from being held.

The Home Affairs Minister emphasised that the event which is for every Guyanese should not be disrupted for ridiculous and malicious objectives.

“The Ministry of Home Affairs is also concerned over the linkages being made by the Opposition between the hosting of Carifesta and the temporary ban of CNS Channel Six. Carifesta is for all Guyanese and the rights of all Guyanese to be part of and enjoy Carifesta, should not be subjected to a violation of the law by one individual.”

PNCR leader Robert Corbin had been quoted in local news media as saying that there would be “serious protest to make Carifesta unmanageable”.

Meanwhile, the Home Affairs Minister also expressed concern over statements made by PNCR members that teenagers of the community of Buxton on the East Coast of Demerara are being tortured by members of the security forces. He called on them to produce the necessary information.

“What is unbelievable of such statements is the extent to which the PNC can go in its wild abundance of political sanity and objectivity.”

“If the PNC has credible evidence about torture of 15 to16-year-old children and disappearance of hundreds of people, they should submit the details and evidence pertaining to these allegations and submit same to the relevant authorities so they can be thoroughly investigated,” Minister Rohee urged.
