An affront to the memory of Forbes Burnham
The recent statement of Mr. Corbin about making the upcoming Carifesta X unmanageable is an affront to the memory of the late founder leader of the PNC Mr. Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham.
The festival of Carifesta is one of the most endearing legacies of the Burnham regime and one of the few things that is being given prominence by the current regime. This is an event that demonstrates the foresight of Mr. Burnham as it was hosted right here in Guyana before the establishment of CARICOM itself. This is an event that all Africans in the Caribbean should be proud to commemorate and the actions of Mr. Corbin should be condemned by all peoples of every CARICOM country.
As Paul Keen Douglas said Cari come and Cari gone. Carifesta, however, is an artistic expression of our Caribbean Identity that is worth preserving no matter who started it. Let us send a signal to the CARICOM secretariat and the other CARICOM states that Carifesta, like West Indies Cricket, is one of the few things that unites us as Caribbean people and must not be messed with.
