Kaieteur News headline biased
“Back to reality! E/bo routed for 43.” (Kaieteur News, 1 April). That is one of those headings which shall always remain etched in my mind.
For those who are not so vulnerable to Freudian- slips but more discreet, shrewd and respectful, that title resonates with bigotry. To exemplify, the heading suggests that, if not Essequibo, at least the Essequibo cricket team, is incapable of being victorious in inter-county cricket battles with the other two counties. Thus, when the Cinderella boys make paltry scores such as 43 that is when reality prevails. Otherwise, an Essequibo victory against Demerara, as had recently occurred in the same tournament, can only be characterized as hallucinatory, unreal if you will.
Is there any surprise therefore when we see the exclamation point stamped after “reality”? There seems to be so much ecstasy, a sort of vengeful euphoria now that the “unreality” has evaporated.
From Jim Crowism to sexism to provincialism.
Back to reality indeed, our country is trapped in more than brutal crimes.
