LIAM Sebastien fashioned his maiden first-class century to give the Windward Islands first innings points over Guyana on the penultimate day of their final round Carib Beer Series match at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence yesterday.

The 23-year-old, left-hander, who retired briefly due to cramps in his hand, stroked 11 fours in his responsible 133 which lasted 291 minutes and 331 balls.

As a result, Windwards were dismissed for 467, in response to Guyana’s 396 in their first innings.

Resuming on 267 for three, the Windwards lost two early wickets when Esaun Crandon sent back Darren Sammy who added seven to his overnight 65, and Donwell Hector (0) in the space of two runs to leave the visitors on 277 for five.

Skipper Rawle Lewis joined the solid Sebastien, unbeaten on 42 overnight, and together they took the score to 311 before Lewis miscued a pull off pacer Trevon Garraway and was taken at mid-on for 18.

Part-time leg-spinner Sewnarine Chattergoon then trapped Donwell Hector (0) leg-before-wicket, 13 minutes before lunch to leave Windwards at 312 for seven.

After lunch, Sebastien found an able ally in Mervin Matthew (39) and added 81 for the eighth wicket before the latter was bowled by leg-spinner Leon Johnson.

Sebastien passed his previous highest score of 90 before reaching his century from 274 balls, 381 minutes with eight fours, just before tea.

With Sebastien forced to retire hurt due to cramps at 404 for eight, Nelon Pascal (16) and Shane Shillingford (18 not out) continued to pile on the runs against an ordinary Guyana attack.

When Pascal was taken at slip off leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo at 428 for nine, Sebastien returned to the middle to put together 39 for the last wicket with Shillingford to further frustrate Guyana.

Crandon (2-79) and Bishoo (2-156) were the most successful bowlers for the hosts.

Behind by 71 runs, Guyana quickly lost Krishna Arjune for five, lbw to Matthew at 19 for one.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who flew to Trinidad on Sunday for the West Indies Players Association awards ceremony, returned to the game in the post-lunch session.

As a result Guyana were forced to field with 10 players for the first session and 75 minutes into the second. (CMC)
