Climate change more evident
Climate change is becoming more and more evident everyday and we are told of the ‘Third World’ countries being most affected. It is clear that Guyana is no exception to climate change since we have already witnessed the recent Spring Tide on the East Coast of Demerara.
Due to this example, I want to urge all residents, especially in vulnerable areas to take extra precautions to mitigate some effects. We have seen the Government’s timely interventions which eased the water off the land almost immediately to bring relief to the residents and we commend them.
I want to remind Guyanese who constantly bombard the Government because of the flooding that occurred that the overtopping is the result of low pressure system in the Atlantic that generated wave action causing abnormal swells and excessive high tides affecting the Caribbean.
The overtopping is the reaction of the effects of global warming and climate change in the region which all should remember and work along with the Government to put measures in place to help cushion the effects.
