Work ongoing to improve No. 63 Beach
- Easter activities attract more than 20,000 personsGeorgetown, GINA, March 25, 2008
The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce in an effort to improve the No. 63 Beach in Region Six has set-up an Interim Management Committee to aid in this regard. This is also part of an overall attempt towards making the Beach a tourist attraction.
Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Manniram Prashad made this disclosure during his visit yesterday to the ‘Easter Happenings’ at the beach.
“We want to make sure that this beach is well organized. That is why the Ministry has organized a beach committee right now. It is an interim beach committee which is functioning as of today in a sense that they are here on the beach working. The broad-based committee will be managing the beach…We had a committee previously but there were some problems,” Minister Prashad said.
Members of the committee are comprised of persons from the Regional Chairman’s office, Neighbourhood Democratic Council, business community, residents in the surrounding areas and the Chamber of Commerce.
The committee and the Ministry during yesterday’s event distributed information releases, brochures and garbage bags.
The releases were used to inform persons about the proposed mechanisms to be put in place which includes a list of rules and regulations, such as: zoning regulations, user fee for vehicles, waste disposal procedures and fees for food and beverage concessions.
“This was done after consultations. A little modification will have to be done here and there but the whole idea is that we are sensitising people that in future this beach will be well managed….Nobody would be charged any entrance fees because this is the policy of the government,” Minister Prashad emphasized.
No. 63 Beach which is one of Guyana’s tourism leading assets attracted over 20,000 persons for its Easter activities. This included a kite flying competition for the largest and most unusual kites organized by the Ministry and the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA).
Saheed Mohammed’s kite was judged the largest and Nandraney Kishin the most unusual. Both winners will receive a trip to Kaieteur Falls.
The beach plays an important part in the observation of annual holidays such as Easter Monday beach fete and other events where residents of Berbice and surrounding areas go to enjoy the sun, sand and water in a clean and pristine environment.
Minister Prashad said the work to enhance the beach must be done immediately to cater for the flow of tourists in the future, pointing to when the Berbice River Bridge will be opened.
“We have to cater for the influx of visitors that will come to this beach from August or September when the Berbice Bridge is open. We will be having 5,000 persons a week here. We (government) see this beach as a major tourist attraction… We have to work from now. We cannot wait until those things happen,” the Tourism Minister posited.
