Top U.S.diplomat, Army official visiting Guyana today
UNITED States (U.S.) Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Mr.Thomas A. Shannon and Commander of the U.S. Southern Command, Admiral James G. Stavridis are visiting Guyana from today.
Their purpose is to strengthen and enhance bilateral relations with this country, a release said.
The release said the two are expected to hold meetings with President Bharrat Jagdeo and other Government officials.
The visitors will also inspect the nearly completed cold storage facility at Timehri, East Bank Demerara, during a tour organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Laparkan Airways.
The erection of the bond is a joint effort by the ministry, Laparkan and the U.S. funded Guyana Trade and Investment Support (GTIS) and Supply Chain Management System (SCMS), which will have a major commercial and human impact.
Its twin purpose is to prevent spoilage of essential HIV/AIDS drugs and facilitate the storing of fresh produce, fish and other products bound for export to the U.S. and elsewhere.
It is scheduled to commence operations in April and exemplifies the successful public/private partnerships fostered in Guyana by U.S. funding and expertise, the release said.
On the tour with the top diplomat and Army official, too, will be U.S. Embassy Charge d’Affaires Karen Williams and Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy.
One Comment so far ...
what was this idiot military thug midget doing in Guyana? and now this?
“We consider Latin America and the Caribbean to be potential bases for future terrorist threats to the United States and others in the Americas,” Admiral Stavridis noted.
“The conditions in parts of the region - easily skirted borders, black market economies, corruption, poverty, established illicit trafficking routes - all could provide
manoeuvring room for any form of terrorism to exploit, to include Islamic radical groups.”
He made reference to the alleged involvement of a Trinidadian and three Guyanese nationals in a reported plot to bomb the gas lines leading to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, saying that “the leading suspects’ roots in the Caribbean raise the specter of Islamic terrorist activity gaining traction.”
“We believe members, facilitators, and sympathisers of Islamic terrorist organisations are indeed present in our hemisphere,” Admiral Stavridis indicated.
