Climate Change is a worldwide phenomenon
Daily, we are faced with the effects of global warming in the form of climate change. This not only affects Guyana, but countries all over the world. During the recent Spring Tide period, Guyana, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and Dominica were affected.Over the past few days the Better Hope, Montrose and Vryheid’s Lust communities have been affected by the Spring Tides causing some homes to be flooded. However, with government’s interventions the effect of the overtopping was allayed.
Likewise, in Trinidad and Tobago waves 15-20 feet high pounded the country. “The beach, river and road were like one.” It is predicted that there will be millions in damage, a newspaper article published on March 23 read.
In Barbados, reefs were also affected.
The impact of climate change is causing a major shift in our way of life. As it continues it is expected that there will be direct damage to tourism industries in many countries. If countries where foreigners visit yearly have their natural resources continuously depleted then there is likely to be a loss of attractiveness of the region as a tourist destination.
The Caribbean region is already suffering from some of the negative impacts of climate change, and urgent action must be taken. Individuals need to take notice and be pro-active.
