Unity is strength
The truth must be told. Guyana could be a great country of the future and a model for democracy, culture and religious tolerance. This was demonstrated over the past week when the Bahai faith ended their period of meditation and celebration of their New Year. The Muslims observed the birth anniversary of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (OWBP). The Hindus celebrated the spring festival of Holi or Phagwah and the Christians, Easter. The leaders of all political parties and religious denomination sent beautiful and sincere greetings emphasising The Spiritual Unity Of All Human Kind.
Hindu and Muslim teachers lived a life before the government of The Hon. Linden Forbes Burnham made Youman Nabi and Phagwah public holidays. These people who formed a large portion of the work force feigned sickness and stayed home to partake in their religious traditions whilst the Christians were given holidays. The new laws brought some equality but did not go far enough.
The media gave full coverage of the holidays and cultural performances. What was SAD however was the absence of minority political personnel from most if not all events. His Excellency Bharrat Jagdeo and his ministers were seen attending most of the celebrations. I WONDER who was invited and who was excluded. UNITY IS STRENGTH.
Remember who brought CARIFESTA to Guyana? The TRUTH SHALL TRIUMPH and GOOD SHALL OVERCOME EVIL as was displayed by the essence of the just concluded celebrations.
