THE first Phagwah Mela in West Coast Berbice, Region Five, is slated to take place tomorrow at the Bath Settlement Community Centre Ground, as part of efforts by the Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) to involve persons from across the country in its programmes.

The event will include special appearance by Pandit Shri Prakash Gossai and will feature remarks by various distinguished officials, including Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud.

President Bharrat Jagdeo, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and other Government Ministers have also been invited, according to a statement from the organisers.

The IAC, in keeping with its desire to give back to the community during its outreach programme will host the activity free of charge for persons to celebrate Phagwah in a family-friendly environment since there will be various types of games and other entertainment for the children and entire family.

The cultural programme will include performances from the Bath Settlement Mandir, Shieldstown Mandir, Academy of Apex Education, Shelita’s Dance Troupe, Jhankar Dance Troupe and Shakti Strings Orchestra. In addition, traditional Indian items such as jewellery, clothing and food will be on sale.

The gates will be open at 14:00 hrs and it is expected that there will be a large gathering.

The event is a prelude to the series of Melas to be held by the IAC to mark Indian Arrival Day in April/May.
