Situation demands clearing of Buxton backlands
IT is baffling to see how some people are using the clearing of the lands aback of Buxton to create mischief, sow seeds of discord and reap political benefits.
Clearly these people are not patriots and as such do not have the interest and future of this nation at heart.
In a situation where 11 lives were slaughtered in the most beastly inhuman fashion triggering shock and agony among the entire nation, it is unbelievable that there are some amongst us who would put greater value to crops than the safety and well-being of their fellow country men.
From the inception of the announcement by the government of its intention to clear those lands, which all and sundry know have been used as a safe haven by the criminals, it made it emphatically clear that farmers will be compensated for loss of crops.
In fact, this government has had an unblemished history when it comes to the compulsory acquisition of private property and it has always ensured adequate compensation in such situations.
In the current situation, the issue is one of national security and therefore it is an imperative that everything be done to apprehend the criminals and their cohorts.
It will be recalled that in the early period of heightened criminality along the East Coast corridor, the government had given consideration to clearing the lands, but opted not to because of the economic impact on farmers and GUYSUCO.
Now the gravity of the present state of affairs has left the government with no other alternative.
No sensible or reasonable person or political party would criticise a government for its present course of action.
Only yesterday, the Agriculture Minister visited Buxton to meet farmers and discuss the question of compensation. One would ask then if the government intended to play “bully”, as some are trying to make it out, would they have embarked upon such a course of action?
But maybe if the heightened criminality is curbed and stability is returned it burst the “bubble” of those that thrive politically from such situation, and allow them a pivot on which to apply pressure on the government with their life-long agenda of destabilization.
After all, a former President and leader of political party had declared: “I will unleash the dogs of war.”
Could it be that the late London and “Fine Man” and company constitute those “dogs of war” and are now unleashing the terror to achieve the ultimate political goal of their masters.
Probably, some are seeing themselves as being checkmated in the near future and like the drowning man are now clutching at a straw.
Whatever the political intrigues in this chess game the focus has to be on rooting out these criminal beasts from the midst of our country and bring peace and harmony among our people and move this country towards unlocking its vast potential.
People must appreciate in certain situations like the current one there are necessities and despite how painful they may be, no other course can be adopted.
The Joint Services must be given optimum support in their current operations by the law abiding residents of Buxton, because all Guyanese know that this village has a rich history of producing a host of exemplary role models.
Therefore the security operations cannot be viewed as one against Buxton, but rather against those who are bent on criminality and are using the village as a safe haven.
There is always a limit and perhaps the Lusignan incident is that limit. Therefore, the time to act is now to wrench back this country from the evil beings that have the physical stature of humans but are beastly in mentality.
