Public must continue cooperating with registration exercise - GECOM
THE Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) yesterday acknowledged that the current situation in the country may have the potential to affect the ongoing house-to-house registration.
But Public Relations Officer, Mr. Vishnu Persaud, said in a statement, it must be understood that the conduct of this exercise, which is GECOM’s constitutional mandate, is of national importance and, as such, the officers must continue with their work.
He said GECOM’s field registration staff will, in the presence of scrutineers, continue to visit persons at their respective residences to fill out applications and take fingerprints and photographs of those who meet the criteria.
The statement said it must be noted, however, that the Commission will, at no time, expose its staffers or scrutineers to situations in which they could face danger.
They will, at all times, be wearing prominently displayed identification badges.
GECOM called on all persons to continue giving full support and cooperation to the field registration staff and scrutineers as they traverse the various communities to carry out this national task.
By so doing, GECOM said, persons would be contributing to the successful completion of the ongoing exercise.
