FIFTEEN people, including 10 children, were left homeless after their two-flat wooden house fell Sunday night in Princes Street, Georgetown.
Fortunately, however, no one was injured as they all managed to hurry out of the building before it crashed to the ground.

Head of the household, Lucretia Fraser, 38, of Lot 10 Princes Street, said the disaster happened at about 19:00 h when everybody was at home.

They heard a loud creaking sound and, as the children became very afraid, they ran outside, she said.

Fraser said most of her household furniture and all her worldly possessions were destroyed.

They were still trying to find shelter when the Guyana Chronicle visited Tuesday as the rest of the fallen structure was being dismantled.

“We knew the house was old and it swayed a few times but we did not expect it to fall so soon,” the woman declared.

The mother of seven said she is contemplating her next move but is willing to accept help to get a roof over their heads as soon as possible.

She has asked neighbours to keep some clothes but the children, most of whose belongings were destroyed, are unable to go to school.
