Guyana government cannot stop climate change
I hope all readers of the Stabroek News (January 16 edition) would have given great attention to the World News segment which included a very interesting article titled ‘Greenland thaw biggest in 50 years – report.’
In the article, scientists reported meltdown of the greatest thaw of Greenland’s ice in half a century, which would quicken the rise in sea level around the world. Scary, as it may seem, it is a reality we must face and I say ‘we’ meaning Guyanese.
Imagine the impact of great sea level rise on us, when more than 70 percent of our population is located along the coast and nearly all of our agricultural activities are done there as well.
Increase in sea level would not only affect our sea defences, but drainage and irrigation which are already dealing with heavy rainfall in short periods.
Climate change is a natural reality we are facing and we must accept that it cannot be stopped by Guyana, the government or even the most powerful leader.
And it often annoys me when some individuals, groups, agencies, political parties etc, would stand boldly and call upon the government of the day to ‘do more,’ when the question is what is there to be done?
