Trio protest NCC ‘Link Show’ refusal by National Cultural Centre
THE cast of the satirical ‘Link Show 25’, led by the Director, Mr. Ron Robinson yesterday staged a protest in front of the National Cultural Centre (NCC).
It followed the ruling by management of the facility that the production will not be shown there.
Robinson explained to the media that the script for any presentation has to be submitted six weeks before the proposed date but, because of other commitments, he was unable to deliver it on time.He claimed Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony had given him up to October 18 to do so but, due to hiccups, he made his submission 24 hours after the deadline, on the evening of October 19.
“It was I who initiated the move and, when you put skills at risk, you have to pay,” he lamented, adding that, he was one day late and NCC Manager, Mr. Frederick Christian insisted that the play be cancelled.
Robinson charged that Christian has a personal problem with him and revealed that it is not the first occasion on which he encountered such difficulties with the manager.
Robinson said, too, that, during the staging of ‘Miriamy’, in aid of the restoration of the Theatre Guild playhouse, he experienced similar problems.
He also declared that what he called “such autocratic behaviour” displayed by Christian will impact negatively on the Caribbean Festival of Creative Arts (CARIFESTA) but would not prevent him from continuing with the staging, even if it requires moving over to the Theatre Guild premises.
Meanwhile, Mr. Henry Rodney, one of the actors in the Link Show said: “Once you affect one, you affect all and too often actors are treated with utmost disrespect.”
The Link Show, one of the most anticipated on the Guyanese satirical calendar, had its first showing in 1981.
The Guyana Chronicle was unable to get a comment from Christian, who bluntly refused to speak to the State media.
