Speeding pickup crashes into fence at Oceanic Villas, Liliendaal
A DRIVER in a speeding pickup, attempting to overtake a mini-bus, crashed into the fence of Oceanic Villas at Liliendaal yesterday morning, tearing it down, and extensively damaging an adjoining security office.
It was the same spot another speeding driver slammed into about a week and a half ago.
The driver and five others, including the guard in the security hut of the Oceanic Villas, died in that October 21 crash.
Fortunately, no one died in yesterday’s accident, and the driver emerged from his badly wrecked pickup, appearing not to have been badly hurt. He quickly disappeared from the scene.
Police, however, identified him as Santosh Outar of Atlantic Gardens, and Commander Leroy Brummel was adamant that he be charged.
“He should go to court; I see no reason why he should not appear in court”, Mr. Brummel told the Guyana Chronicle.
Witnesses commented on the miraculous escape for those in the mini-bus whose driver skillfully manoeuvred to avoid what could have been a deadly two-vehicle smash-up.
The smash-up occurred around 09:45h and persons at the scene marvelled in relief that no one was in the security hut.
They also said that shortly after the crash, persons shortlisted to be interviewed as a replacement for the security guard who was killed on October 21, turned up and learned of the accident.
Proprietor of Oceanic Villas, Mr. Paul Shivraj, had the security of his tenants as top priority. Less that an hour after the destruction of the fence and security office, an excavator was removing the rubble so that the damaged fence and security office could be repaired.
Yesterday’s crash drew another warning from the Police Force against drivers who speed.
In a statement, it said speed was the major contributory factor to the crash and appealed to motorists to “slow down and save lives, and the destruction of property.”
