At Demerara Assizes…
THREE more witnesses, two of them policemen at the time, testified yesterday on the resumption of the Main Street murder case at the Demerara Assizes.

On trial is Kevin Anthony also known as Sean Christian, who is indicted for having unlawfully killed Feroze Ali on January 3, 2005, during the ‘Main Big Lime’ in Main Street, Georgetown.

One witness, Lance Corporal Desmond Johnny said he was in a patrol party under Inspector Deonarine that night when he arrested him as Anthony was about to leave his Leopold and George Streets home, also in the city.

Johnny said, although the arrest was in relation to the capital offence, he did not handcuff Anthony nor record his name in the Occurrence Book, the Crime Book or any other place.

Witness denied a suggestion, by Defence Counsel Lyndon Amsterdam, that he had lied when he said he held the accused the night of the killing.

Johnny said his superior, Deonarine, who was also present when the detainee was handed over to another rank at Brickdam Police Station, did not object to his actions as being not in keeping with the law relative to investigations.

Deonarine himself confirmed, to Justice Rishi Persaud and the jury, that he was in company with Johnny and other policemen that night.

The witness, who has since retired from the Police Force, maintained that he was a competent officer and would not have permitted a junior to do something which was wrong.

The third witness to testify yesterday, Charran Persaud said he, too, attended the Main Big Lime on January 2, 2005 and the victim was among his friends.

Persaud said they were in a line but became separated after they were robbed by men attired in camouflage clothing with hoods over their heads.

Soon after the robbery, the witness said he heard two gunshots and later saw Ali lying wounded.

Persaud said he assisted in taking the injured man to Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he was pronounced dead.

The trial is continuing.
