Road concerns
AS I traverse the East Bank Demerara main road to and from work, I cannot help noticing the quality of road construction work from Ruimveldt to Peters Hall.
The excavation at Peters Hall has been open for several days and is accumulating a lot of water.
This causes the soil below to be saturated and will give poor compaction and consequent settlements.
Water has also accumulated at Eccles in the centre of the roadway which was excavated several weeks ago.
This is causing the base of the road to be saturated and it will fail in due course.
From the beginning of the construction, I saw materials been tested on site while the compacter is compacting materials just a few feet away.
The materials are also not compacted in layers of uniform thickness.
The depth of excavation varies and great consideration should be given when compacting areas since uneven excavation can lead to uneven settlements.
The road is also been constructed in many small segments, and each construction joint is a possible failure zone.
I am very concerned about the poor traffic controls and total absence of traffic signs in the project area.
So far we have had two fatal accidents on this project site and still I do not see any improvement in traffic signs.
The temporary striping used for lane identification should be removed as soon as they become obsolete since they are misleading.
