Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation doctors training upgraded for Cardiac Unit
Georgetown, GINA, January 19, 2004
Training for doctors at the Cardiac Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) has been upgraded, strengthening its emergency Cardiac Care said the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Michael Khan.
According to Khan, in 2003 the Hospital Corporation had moved to establish the GHPC as a training site to conduct courses in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Basic Life Support (BLS).
“Our doctors are now exposed to in-depth training and now we are equipped with the appropriate mechanisms to have persons treated,” said the CEO.
He also added that the Public Hospital has the best Intensive Care Unit facilities in the country.
Additionally, in April of last year, the Emergency Department of the University of Vanderbilt Medical Centre in Tennessee, USA collaborated with the GPHC, training 29 staff members who were then certified as ACLS providers. Links were also established with the Barbados Heart Foundation.
Eight of the original 29 certified staffers were identified to be trained as instructors when the Vanderbilt team returned in August last year.
Subsequently, the eight instructors conducted their own ACLS, imparting their knowledge to an additional eight hospital staff. The instructors were supervised by Dr. Brian Charles of the Barbados Heart Foundation.
