Georgetown, GINA, February 26, 2004

The Traffic Department continues to focus on patrols, educating the public and enforcing traffic rules and regulations.
“We are focusing on speeding, loud music, seatbelts, heavily tinted windows and educating school children on road safety,” said Traffic Chief Michael Harlequin, in an interview with the Government Information Agency (GINA).
Harlequin noted that educating school children is very important. Traffic officers visit schools countrywide lecturing to children on the need to be traffic conscious on the roads.
“So far for the year, seven children have lost their lives and this is of grave concern to the Traffic Department,” Harlequin stressed.
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) will also be assisting the Traffic Department with lectures to schools, the Traffic Chief added.
Traffic officers are also based on the East Bank road in an effort to ease traffic congestion, since there are several bridges being constructed there.
Harlequin said that in all of the divisions, traffic officers usually patrol the roads during the evenings.
“We have come to realize that many of the accidents occur in the evenings,” he explained.
