Cabinet approves $11M for Mashramani celebrations

-         PM, Government Ministers to fan out for regional observances

Georgetown, GINA, February 04, 2004

This year’s Mash celebrations look promising and as usual the Administration will be doing its best to ensure Mashramani 2004 is grand.
Cabinet at its meeting yesterday approved $11.2M from the Lottery Funds given to Government, to fund Government agencies, Ministries and regional celebrations.
Head of the Presidential Secretariat and Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon at his weekly post-Cabinet media briefing today made this announcement.
The celebrations this year will include adult and junior calypso competition, road March competition, masquerade competition, children costume parade, steel band, and costume and float parade, Dr. Luncheon said.
Government Ministers will also fan out to join the regional flag raising ceremonies and Mashramani celebrations:

Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Harripersaud Nokta

Region Eight

Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Manzoor Nadir

Regions Nine and Ten 

On February 23 each year Guyanese celebrate the occasion of the country becoming a Republic. This year it is the 34th anniversary of Guyana’s Republican status.
Guyana was declared a Republic in 1970, four years after it gained independence from Great Britain.
As usual Government allocates a sizeable sum of money for Mashramani celebrations by State agencies and Ministries. Last year more than $10M was set aside.
Government Ministers also spread out to all of the ten Regions to attend Flag-Raising ceremonies.
